Band Aid

Here is a post that closely resembles one of my very first. I just don't want you guys to forget that I listen to music that is from...not my decade...on a regular basis. I also like it when those songs are redone (sometimes). Here are a few videos, then and now. This time I will let you form your own opinions.

Then (what is Bono doing with his shoulders??)

Now (seriously, is there anything Glee hasn't redone?...except We Are the World)

I haven't actually tried to play them together like I did with the last one (the two We Are the Worlds).

Back then I was obsessed...back then.

This doesn't even need a caption or description. I just love being an aunt. I would drive to Rexburg every day if I could. Four nieces and nephews?? How did I get so lucky???

Be So Happy That When You Are With Others, They Become Happy Too

Picture this:

2 second grade boys, playing CONNECT FOUR. The stakes are high (ok, not that high...), the emotions are intense (well, I don't think they cared that much), and the pressure is on (well, I guess we were racing the clock).

Red. Yellow. Red-"ooh, you think that will stop me?" Yellow-"what are you going to do about THAT." Red. Yellow. Red. Yellow-"take that!" Red. Yellow.

Then, the moment that caused me to cover my mouth with my hand, stand up, and leave the table so I could quietly laugh while simultaneously recording the event on a post-it note.

Again, my favorite "swearing student," says, with all the African-American Vernacular English (not a racist comment, just a reference to the dialect) attitude that is possible in an 8 year old Caucasian boy - "OH NO YOU DI-INT!" (the hyphen, of course, represents the glottal stop).

Thank you, favorite student, for keeping my life so very entertaining. What would I do without you?

Reason #768

1 = my favorite "swearing" student in 2nd grade
2 = new speech student

1: uhhhhggg, I always have to miss the play because of speech and resource and stuff!!
2: Hey hey! At least you don't have ECZEMA!
Miss Devery: ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ya. True.

“Volcano: A mountain with hiccups”

"say, volcano"
"bolcano"
"oh let's try VOLcano"
"no I like BOLcano"
"oh but it's actually volcano with our good vvvvv sound, VVVVVolcano"
"no. there's two kinds of -canos. I like bolcano better."

We Are Young!

A QUICK PHOTO UPDATE - HERE'S WHAT I'VE BEEN UP TO

I am making these this year (hopefully today) thanks to Andi Paige Powell

Visiting Grandma Larsen-Scott

Loving every minute of being with this girl!

Teaching my nephew how to pinkie pound (Chels!)

Losing words-with-friends, but getting 16 points with MY NAME!

Being crafty, what??

Never fear, Christmas break is upon us and I will have more time to blog! (I know you're excited)

Day 3

Today, is Day 3 of my "100 WORKOUT" plan. Well, technically its Day 5, but I am only doing the workout every other day so far. Lol, Days 1, 2, 3, and 4 I was SO SO  sore. So sore it was embarrassing actually. I am quite positive I looked like a 98 year old woman. Hopefully It won't be like that always. My goal is to eventually be able to do it in the AM and the PM. Right now, every other PM is all my poor little iliotibial bands can handle!

Here it is, have at it!

Just Like a Yo-Yo

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Jessica.
She worked at Pier 49 Pizza.
One day, as she was going about her usual workday, and unexpected customer came to order a pizza.
He also gave her his pen. (Was it an accident? I'm not sure)
Then, the unexpected customer took his pizza and left the restaurant.
Obviously Jessica quickly got on Facebook to let the world know of the amazing experience that had just occurred.
Little did she know, her friend Devery will forever be jealous of her because of that brief interaction she had with that specific customer.

And they all lived happily ever after.

Who was that customer, you ask?

...but I bet he looked a bit more like this...

Why can't it ever be me???
Okay, well, I guess I did have THIS chance:

Still, I'm in Provo, shouldn't I be seeing them everyday??

Yeah, you'll be the coolest person in the room when you pull one out and show it around, but that gets old fast when three other people have them and one person somehow has one that glows in the dark. John C. Dvorak

Everybody, meet Ruby (Okay, so its hard to take a picture of her so these are just look-a-likes). Ruby is the newest addition to my life, and I am probably going to become very attached to her very soon. I am still in a place where I can imagine not having it, but I bet that will only last a few more days...hours...minutes... She is kind of great and also comes with SIRI which is so so cool!! (seriously, you can talk to her about ANYTHING!)

Okay, yes, I realize it may not be normal that I name everything...but it just happens. A wise woman, well, a fellow high school student circa 2005, once said: "You don't name a car, car has a name and you find it." That is how Car #1-Ford Aspire-was called Littlered. Car #2-1991 Nissan Sentra-was known affectionately by ALL as Clyde. Car #3-2007 Toyota Corolla- is of course Charlie. My first laptop was Danny (because my roommates twin computer was Sandy and they were obviously a couple). My thesis had a name, but I don't remember what it was...it was some cowboy name-and I don't even remember why... I feel like something else also has a name...oh yeah, my GPS is named Drover! He is Australian and he drove me to Washington from Missouri and back, and also to Utah from Missouri. The only things that don't yet have names are my violin and my guitar-but thats not for lack of trying. Some things are more crafty at hiding their name than others. I have been trying for years. Finally, that brings me to Ruby! She is my my  newest purchase and possesses some scarily lifelike qualities. She will probably be a significant time-waster but I have asked my roommates to give me 2 days to get over the novelty of a smart phone and then I promise I will not be so consumed!

So, everyone feel free to welcome Devery to the world of smart phones, it took me a REALLY LONG time to get there. Even my students were astonished that my phone "isn't even a touch screen!" and that I couldn't download apps on it. No more!

I can't imagine anything more worthwhile than doing what I most love. And they pay me for it." Edgar Winter

Oh no, first I was "that aunt" (the one who carries around pictures of her nieces and nephews...and shows everybody) and now I am "that person" who can only talk about their job! Just give me a few months and I promise I will have more to my life than work ( I hope).

Random thoughts or quotes I want to remember that I wrote down on a post-it throughout the week (the abbreviated version was on the post-it of course)

-made the most embarrassed and lack-of-emotion student laugh

-whyyyy do kids in Utah say MELK for milk, and TELL for tail? WHY?? (In my mind this is followed by, "YOU know why!!)

-I would like all boys out there to know (except for I am pretty sure that only 3 people read this, and they are all female) that you have just officially been "one-upped" by a fifth grade boy. One day I parted my hair on the other side, which obviously means my bangs are on the other side of my extraordinarily large forehead, and he NOTICED! It was amazing!

- Maybe my class should be considered a workout, more than one of my students left the speech room winded.

-Sometimes student peer pressure can result in the favor of the teacher. One first-grader gave me a little package of skittles. His speech partner got all...what, jealous? nervous? guilty? and started spouting off about how he is going to bring me a treat next time, and he should have brought one this time, and he will bring his lunch treat, and he will bring one he will he will he will!

-One first grader was working on his /d/'s in the final position, and the word was bride. His sentence of choice was "I need a bride!" It was soooo adorable!!

Well, thank you for being my online post-it note. Like I said, someday (fingers crossed) I will have a real life and can write about something more than just work. You know, fun stuff like... ... ... ummmm I guess I will let you know when I get there!

Six o'clock already I was just in the middle of a dream - The Bangles

So, Mondays are my hardest day. I know what you're thinking, "Duh Devery, nobody likes Monday." But for real, Monday is my hardest day. Just ask my roommates. I am pretty sure that every Monday since  the beginning of October I have come home and hung out upstairs for about 2 hours and then have gone into my room from like 6:30 pm until....THE NEXT DAY. Don't get me wrong, its not a bad day, because, remember,

So, here are 5 objects from my "How to Survive Monday" package:

1.
Michael is a MUST.

2.
On Mondays I probably  have 15 mini M&Ms from my stash for my students, whereas other days I can control myself and have only 5.

3. Cosby Show. I may or may not own the first three seasons of this. (which obviously means that I do own them).  (entire blog post to come later)

4. Homemade dinner. Today it was Quinoa and Black Bean Salad with a cilantro-lime dressing. Yummm.

5.
Thank you whoever you are for creating another medium of wasting time online.

There you go, try any or all of the above and you are guaranteed to have a fantastic Monday....or else you will just be a little bit more like me (and who doesn't want that??)

Owww

Well, today I have a very sore neck and very sore abs. Whose fault is that?

His.

Meet Mr. 8-minute Abs on Youtube.

You try it, 2 days with this guy and you will definitely feel it every time (deverytime?) you turn your head. I bet that he looks like he does because he did an 8 minute ab workout everyday. Stay tuned, I am already on day three!!

More words from the speech room!

"Hey, is that your wife?" - he asks, because there was a new person (who was actually a boy) in the room-A Weber State student observing me that day
"Nope, he is no my wife." - she responds with a smile
"No no no, is that your husband?"  - asks the other boy who is less confused about the  whole situation...
"Nope, he's not my husband." - she responds with a smile
"Wait wait, I thought you were a boy" - the first boy bravely confesses
"Ummm, what?" - really having no idea where go from there
"No, I mean, I was confused. Before I thought you were a boy...I don't know, nevermind" - ohh, poor boy.

Or poor Devery?

Chocolate.

My TCI (Total Chocolate Intake) for Halloween was officially:

  • 10 MINI m&ms
  • 1 MINI tootsie roll pop

Yep. Thats all. Again, this "being an adult" business is not as fun as it looks-maybe there is a way we can combine being a kid and being an adult. Hmmmm, how about buying my own ticket to Disneyland?? Yeah, that would cover it! :) Anyway, to make up for my lack  of chocolate on the chocolatey-est day of the year, I am DEFINITELY going to Winco today to buy some sugar-free chocolate covered cashews, YUMMMMM.

Note to self-post about how old I apparently look

Forget love - I'd rather fall in chocolate! ~Attributed to Sandra J. Dykes

I don't actually really get into Halloween all that much. This year I went to a murder mystery party (most fun party of all time!), scary movie night, and a family party...all before Halloween! So far, no plans for actual Halloween night tonight (except Monday is my go-to-bed-early-night, so maybe that?) However, if anyone is trying to decide if they want to be a teacher, all they have to do is come to school on Halloween. It may possibly be the cutest thing I have ever seen!! I have seen a lot of missionaries, ninjas, pirates, football players, witches, Harry/Ron/Hermione's, princesses...I just love it!! I told my students that if they came and showed me their costume I would give them candy. Thats not a bribe right? Just an honest effort to see their cute costumes!! (Ok, and maybe to make them like me more. Gee, it sounds just like a bribe...)

Bring on the chocolate!!!

You have a cough? Go home tonight; eat a whole box of Ex-Lax - tomorrow you'll be afraid to cough.~ Pearl Williams

Will someone more creative and entrepreneuring than me (oh wait, thats anybody)  please invent a bubble that adults who work in elementary schools can wear to protect the from getting sick every 2 weeks?

That'd be great.

Missouri Visit!

Okay, I promised pictures and here they are!! It can't really get much better than a visit from old friends, while making new friends at the same time! We had such a blast this weekend! I wish they could all live out here!! We went to SLC, hiked(ish) provo canyon, met the Mr. Ollivander of violins, witnessed a rescue, made food, slept, rode the biggest elevator EVER, went to the temple, and all in just a few short days!!(Ok, I am embellishing a little bit. The days weren't any shorter than any other standard 24 hour day...)
Thanks so much Kim and Sarah for coming to Utah!!

Yes this is oh-so-cheesy, I understand that.
Pretty canyon!!

Okay, take a look at the definition in that calf muscle! I mean really!

Awww

We are all a little bit crazy because we just had Pumpkin Soup in bread bowls with Broccoli Salad!

Dreaming my life away?

I had a dream that made me think last night - these two administrators came and sought me out to talk to me about a full-time SLP job at a hospital, an acute care position. This is basically what I have been wanting for the past 4 years. It wasn't an option for me to stay at my school till May, I had to choose right then. By the time the dream had ended, I HADN'T CHOSEN!! What they heck?? How will I ever know what to do??

(P.S.) I am aware that I haven't used any of my own pictures in a long time. That will change soon, I promise.

***addendum*** I remembered as I was driving to work that I also was dreaming about people who were jumping out of a helicopter. I don't remember why, but they did have a purpose. So as I was watching them, one of the guys slipped of whatever contraption they were landing on, and slipped right into an alligators mouth...and was EATEN! What the heck??

Kids say the darndest things!

Favorite quotes from the BEST JOB EVER:

Very happy Second grade boy with a chipmunk voice: "I have moved 4 times"
Me: "Guess how many times I have moved"
"2?"
"20"
"Holy S***"

First grade boy: "How old are you?"
Me: "100"
"Wooowww...wait, you can't be that old."
"Why not?"
"Because you aren't huge!"

Then, the first grade boy who went down that HUGE slide on chutes and ladders (you know which one I mean) says, "Dang Nabbit!" I though for a minute that my dad had walked in!!

Today, the same second grade boy from above (yes, the potty mouth) was working on his /sh/ sound. Sometimes when this happens, they overgeneralize and change all sounds to the sound they are working on. The sentence was "I saw him Sit in the SHade."Yep, you guessed it, he changed that little S into a SH!  Poor guy, he just can't win!! But he did SO WELL with all his /sh/ sounds too!!

Ice Cream Conflict?

This can only mean one thing. Yes, I went to Logan!! Every time (Deverytime?) I go, I love that place and think - why do I not live here?? But then I remember that I chose not to live there. I DO still love it however!
I guess this was probably not the best picture to choose to represent my trip because I only had like 4 bites of Aggie ice cream...but...I did drive back to Provo with a whole box of ice cream for my roommate so that was an adventure (Thanks to mistie for driving so fast!!).
But, even after the Aggie ice cream, BYU Creamery vanilla is still my all-time favorite. No I have not changed my loyalty at all - I'm still an Aggie (not a true aggie of course, just an aggie) but those Cougars sure know how to make vanilla ice cream!!

Americans will put up with anything provided it doesn't block traffic. Dan Rather

Today was definitely an "I love my job" type of day. Well, it was that type of day AFTER i got to work 2 hours after I left my house (luckily I left half an hour early)... Yes, I did start out very angry as it took me an hour and half to go 6 miles. No, I did not stay angry-turns out there was a horrible car accident. I hope they are ok!! Yes, my gas light did come one 20 minutes into the trip. No, I did not run out of gas or get stuck on the freeway. Yes, I am totally convinced that Heavenly Father answers prayers, even little ones involving the gas light-my gas light went off at about 40 minutes in to the trip and came on again as I was pulling into the gas station. I am so grateful!!
Anyway, back to my job. I have a preschooler who has a really  hard time following directions or obeying, especially when it comes to treats. After a particularly rough session, he left my room, then peeked in the window and blew me a kiss! It was adorable!! Thats what makes it all worth it, even the two hour drive from Provo to American Fork :)

Fiery colors begin their yearly conquest of the hills, propelled by the autumn winds. Fall is the artist.

Fall is my favorite because of:

jackets
haunted houses
pumpkin cookin'
sweaters
dark mornings
hot chocolate
soup and homemade bread bowls
carving pumpkins
changing leaves
corn mazes
hooded sweatshirts (all the time)
pre-Christmas
sunday walks
college football....(nope, just checking to see if you were paying attention)
sister's wedding
jeans
scented candles
fireplaces
stovetop s'mores
fall vegetables
General Conference

I'm sure there are more, I am just pretty exhausted. It was a late night watching the Justin Bieber movie last night, I won't lie.

Isn't Utah beautiful? ESPECIALLY in the fall?? I am so lucky to live here!!

I really don't think I need buns of steel. I'd be happy with buns of cinnamon. ~Ellen DeGeneres

Yummm, its been too long since I've made these. I think it was Washington!?!
So the newest thing in my life is GOLD'S GYM. I have, for some reason, decided to get up at or before 5 every morning and go to the gym before work. Part of the deal is that no matter what I do, I have to work out for at least an hour. Except on fridays, I'm giving myself a half day on that day. It is kind of ridiculous! Whose idea was this anyway??? Oh yeah...mine... I hope to get a good workout schedule going, but for now I am trying out all the different options. Thursday morning options = SPIN CLASS!! Who ever thought that spinning was a good idea? I am about ready to tip over! (It probably doesn't help that I ran a mile and a half before going to the class). Okay okay, it wasn't all bad. I really do love the feeling of working out, and its really nice to get it all done in the morning. The goal is to not hate every minute of a 60 minute run. do-able? Yeah, probably. I mean... YES!

And here it is, can you see me?? I'm the fourth from the back! (Okay, not true, but it might as well be. Whats the difference?)

Alright, I guess its time for me to return to my pre-work bowl of oatmeal and do some internet stuff before I have to get to work!

Me? In charge?

Alright, so I'm sure you are getting sick of reading about how surprised I am at this whole adult thing...but I am still so surprised! Tomorrow I am in charge of checking the hearing and speech of roughly 550 kids. Yeah, 550 kids. Oh yes, and not only do I need to check them, but they need to be accurate checks, AND if there are problems, then I need to determine whether or not I am going to add them to my caseload (which is currently at 56 kids). What the heck? Ok I do have a team of six SLPs with me, but STILL! Needless to say I am very nervous and was supposed to be in bed 4 minutes ago. Wish me luck!

Saturday, September 3, 2011

I definitely stole this from my friend Casey! This looks fantastic doesn't it? New goal...make THIS happen, but make it a WORLD map!! What do you think? Its starting...no, continuing, with my YELLOWSTONE TRIP with Kristen Dingus! Wahooooo. October can't come fast enough!!

More photobooth fun, with the Soli's!!

Just a little breakfast entertainment!

Silly faces!!

WARNING! advertencia! CAUTION! WARNUNG! waarschuwing! ATTENTION! avvertimento!

There are ALOT of pictures of me in this post. This is what I chose to devote 22 of the 30 minutes of my "duty free lunch break" to at my BRAND NEW JOB with my BRAND NEWISH COMPUTER! (See you can see some of my supplies behind me!!) Sorry. I got bored. This is what happens when you forget your lunch and facebook is blocked...

So, here's me...

Glowing....

X-Ray?...

This is where I would rather be....

Okay fine, I'm done!

Quick update. I am living in Provo and working in American Fork at Shelley Elementary! I am loving it, and I am so excited to meet the kids soon! Turns out there is a lot to do before I even start therapizing them! (I have no idea if that is a word or not) Basically that is all I am up to, I've been able to travel around Utah a little bit - I've been to Ogden, St. George, Logan, and Rexburg ID. Its been a blast! Ooh, quick shout out to KIELY AND RAFAL who are officially getting married on OCTOBER 6TH! Wahooooo! Oh, and here are some recipes that look amazing. Check them out!!
This one looks to die for: Avalanche Bark

Its about time!!

Forgive me for my lack of creativity and disorganization...but I am just going to caption all of these update pictures...they are not even in the right order, but the choices are: two more months before an update, never update again out of guilt, or disorganized pictures. I'm picking the lesser of three evils (although it probably doesn't even make much difference to anyone which I pick...which I am ok with...) :)

This is Chels and I around mother's day, after eating at Tecanos (I'm not sure how to spell it right now and I'm choosing not to use the amazing technology at my literal fingertips to look it up...)

Happy graduation!!! I am so happy that the whole family could come!! Thank you so much!!

Mom and Dad and I after graduation :)

Sarah you are the best!!

My two best boys :)

What the car accident?? Yes, that is the Geo, totaled on a flatbed trailer. We had an accident on the way to graduation :( It was awful, but luckily no one was hurt!!

...

This is when Kyle came to SLC to go through the temple!! L-R: Chris Sovine(friend of Kyle's, randomly met on FB kind of, but also served his mission in Springfield), Megan Cluff (served her mission in Springfield), Kyle Meadors (friend from Springfield who is currently in Chicago), Sarah England (also served in Springfield), and me (parantheses needed? apparently)

Mini Springfield reunion at the Barger home!! We had such a blast!!

What?!? Yes, that is me. I have an office, with an extra desk, so students can come play speech games with me :)

There you have it, my life up to this point, in a nutshell. Things are GREAT! I promise to take more pics from here on out, AND be better about posting!
